Hungerford Town Band

Hungerford has had a community band almost continuously for over 120 years and in that time it has taken various forms including as a wind band, as a military band and in more recent times as a brass band. During that period it has been central to life in Hungerford and has performed regularly at important community occasions. At a recent reunion of past members of the Band, one of the more senior past members recalled that his first public performance with the Band was at Hungerford Railway Station welcoming home troops from the Second World War.

The records show that the involvement of local youngsters in the Band has been a significant feature for many years. Indeed in 1977, the youth band from Hungerford was selected to lead a parade in Windsor Great Park in celebration of the Silver Jubilee of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. The importance of youth involvement in the Band remains with the Band and forms a fundamental aspect of its constitution. To assist in this there is a separate junior band that meets once a week for rehearsal. The junior band gives regular public performances and its members are encouraged to develop as rapidly as they are able to enable them to join the senior band.

The senior band is one of the leading brass bands in the region and now has 2nd Section status nationally competing in the London and Southern counties region, having qualified to enter the third section National Finals in 2009 and the fourth section National Finals in 2002, 2006 and 2007. The Band released two CDs entitled “Time to Remember” and more recently “Evergreen”.

In Hungerford the Band regularly plays at important community events such as the Carnival and the Remembrance Day Parade and presents 4 concerts each year including the Poppy Concert in aid of the Royal British Legion Hungerford Branch Poppy Appeal..

The Band has strong links with the Hungerford Town Council and the Town & Manor of Hungerford and is very grateful for the financial support given, which has enabled the Band to mature and improve with guidance from our Musical Director, Tim Crouter.
